“Next year is when I finally get my stuff together and get organized.”
“My resolution is to lose the clutter.”
This is the time of year when most of us throw out aspirations that sound absolute. We resolve to do one thing better, or start taking ownership of another. Whether that’s in work or life, one of the most common is organization.
If your desk or workspace is prone to a little disorganization, don’t sweat it. Storage and supporting furniture can help; they’re important to success and productivity, yet are often overlooked, especially when designing a new space or updating an existing one. So we’ve asked our HON organization experts for a few tips on getting organized and which furniture solutions are best for your preferred style.

How many times have you seen a desk (perhaps your own) with no real plan? Papers to the left, coffee cups to right and a whole mess of stuff scattered about...
We have a solution! Setting zones in your workspace will help improve your focus and get you on the road to better organization. Ideally, zones consist of specific areas for personal items, miscellaneous storage, technology—and you’ll see a reduction in clutter in no time.
If you’re changing the look and feel of the office, there’s another “zone” that helps employees in a different way. We’re big fans of mobile and dynamic furniture, and storage islands are a great addition. These units offer seamless adaptability to a variety of office footprints and consolidate storage away from workstations altogether (allowing employees more room to work individually, get together for a quick meeting or simply move around).
This tip is almost a 2-for-1; there’s a quick-fix way to organize individual workstations, and a furniture solution to rethink storage and encourage better flow in your floor plan.
Featured Product: Contain®
Earlier in 2021, we talked about the different furniture needs for active and archival storage. It’s important to know which type you and your employees prefer, or which you want to encourage throughout the office.
Active organizers prefer to keep a variety of things stored, but at the ready—maybe a snack, cell phone, headphones in a cabinet nearby—and only what they currently need in part of the workspace. Archival storage is quite the opposite; people in this category tend to have something just about everywhere, with papers and folders piling up and little definition or structure to the work area.
Does your office have more active organizers, more archival organizers or a mix of both? This will influence furniture needs as you plan to implement storage that also serves as multi-purpose office furniture.
“Storage” doesn’t always mean filing cabinets!
Yes, filing cabinets are a method of storage—and they fill a real need. But at HON, we’ve worked to develop storage solutions that also serve as functional, modern furniture.
“Cookie-cutter approaches to storage configuration and design are becoming less effective in today’s office,” said Brad Maxwell, Category Merchandising Manager for The HON Company. “There’s a growing need to provide flexible work options that balance function and form. Finding unique ways to integrate storage into the floor plan can solve multiple challenges beyond just storing objects, such as garnering safe collaboration or adding a pop of color to the office.”
Let’s start with Fuse™, which is probably the least boring storage furniture you’ll ever set eyes on. Fuse takes things to the next level with sizes and options that make sense for what’s being stored today. Available with keyless digital technology, Fuse protects what’s important and features a vibrant color palette to keep your space energized and your productivity high.
It’s more than just storage. It’s practical office furniture that makes your space better.
Which makes us think of Contain®, our versatile storage system that brings your office together. It works seamlessly with Accelerate®, Abound® or Voi® work surfaces and helps maximize office footprints. Contain invites collaboration with optional bench cushions, too, making it a durable and distinctive collection that brings people together.
We view organization as a critical component to a successful and productive workplace—and we believe it should be a reflection of your identity, just like other furniture solutions from HON.
Even if resolutions aren’t your thing, everyone can benefit from better organization—and we’re here to help. View our storage collections or connect with a member of our team.
