Motivation: an idea meaning the general desire to act or accomplish something; an effort to attain a goal. It may seem simple enough, but the idea invariably ends up being an elusive mythical creature at times.

• Recognition – Give praise to get results! By recognizing a member’s achievements, you can positively influence future behavior. Tell them why they’re being recognized and be genuine about it (nothing’s worse than saying ‘Great Job!’ with a straight face and monotone voice.) Also, give credit where credit is due! Members will always appreciate when a manager takes the time to thank them for their hard work.
• Rewards – Everyone loves prizes or rewards for a job well done, and while additional compensation based on merit can be a well-received incentive, sometimes no cost is needed at all. Our HON Customer Support team gives out a monthly member-nominated “Golden Caster” award. Though spray painted, the Golden Casters are truly worth their weight in gold. • Responsibility – Increasing opportunities and expanding a member’s role can increase. Keep members excited by offering new training or project options. Encourage members to take ownership of new tasks or projects. Give them a boost (and help your department’s productivity) by specifying opportunities that play to their strengths. A member who enjoys coming to work is a valuable investment.

The key is finding the right combination to unlock your members’ potential. Motivation doesn’t have to be elusive. After all, the Loch Ness Monster has been motivating people to find him for years!
