Since 2022, Somos HNI—a Member Resource Group created to empower, celebrate, and inspire HNI members and Hispanic and Latino communities—has gathered to commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15). Established to engage HNI members, their families, and neighborhoods in the contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of American Latino people, the Somos HNI Fiesta kicked off September 3rd and offered attendees a spirited celebration of traditional dance, music, food, and games.
This year’s celebration was overflowing with eager participants, vendors, traditional food, and live music. From a stunning display of quinceañera gowns to folklórico dance to a rousing soccer tournament, the day’s events proved to be both exhilarating and educational.
“Planning the second annual Somos Fiesta was so much fun,” said HON MCR Generalist Gabriela Aguilar-Xolo, who helped organize and plan the event. “Our goal was to celebrate traditions from different Hispanic cultures, including performances, food, and music. It was very rewarding to see more people attend this year’s festival including HNI members, allies, and people from the community.”
According to HNI Factory Manager, Martin Moreno, more than 400 HNI members attended the Fiesta this year, which exceeded last year’s count by over 100.
“Many of the volunteers, vendors, and talent were HNI members or related to HNI members,” said Allsteel Factory Manager Martin Moreno. “It’s heartwarming to see our communities connect in such meaningful ways.”
To the delight of attendees, a local folklĂłrico dance troupe provided a vibrant and reflective glimpse into traditional performance and garb. FolklĂłrico highlights a variety of Mexican cultures and includes choreography, music, and brightly colored costumes.
“I’d never seen Mexican folk dancing,” said HNI member and fiesta attendee Kerin McDonald. “It’s similar to Ukrainian folk dancing, which reminded me of my grandfather.”
Attendees of all ages also listened and danced to the music of Grupo Fantasia, a local band owned by HNI member Alejandro Martinez.
A thrilling soccer tournament made up of seven teams rounded out the visual entertainment. Corner Market United—a team comprised of HNI members—took the trophy.

With an obstacle course, face painting, and a piñata-making station, there was no shortage of fun-filled events for the kids. The volunteers included current and retired teachers from local schools. And a few familiar faces stopped by— HNI members surprised everyone with impromptu appearances as SpongeBob SquarePants and Hello Kitty.
“I have the costumes at home and figured this would be a good treat for the kids,” said HNI member Cristina Gomez. “I also brought toys and balloons to make it a bit more memorable.” Gomez plans to continue her efforts next year and beyond.
“It shows teamwork, in and outside of the workplace,” she said. “I plan to become more active in Somos HNI—I love to participate in stuff like this.”
Working side-by-side with strong leaders who represent diverse backgrounds offered an invaluable perspective for Aguilar-Xolo.
“Being a part of the leadership team for Somos HNI is a very rewarding experience for me, both personally and professionally,” she said. “I was able to help positively impact the overall experience for our members and had the opportunity to get involved in new things. Stretching outside of one’s comfort zone—that is where most growth happens.”
