When an industry comes together for a common cause, the impact can be profound. Wist Business Supplies & Equipment, a HON dealer based in Arizona, exemplifies this collective power through its commitment to charitable giving. For over 65 years, Wist has supported local communities through its philanthropy, but the organization’s most inspiring initiative is its partnership with City of Hope, a renowned cancer and diabetes research organization.

Wist’s signature annual charitable initiative, “Pedal for Hope,” brings together seven teams comprised of 30 riders to participate in Zia Rides’ “24 Hours in the Enchanted Forest”—one of the Southwest's premier mountain bike races. While the event itself isn’t directly affiliated with City of Hope, Wist leverages the race to raise funds for the organization’s cancer research, transforming this competitive sporting event into a powerful act of charity.

"Everyone who’s ever ridden in our group has a story—whether it's about a loved one who’s been lost or a friend who’s currently fighting cancer," shares Peter Drozdowicz, Wist’s Financial Manager and CFO. “We’ve also had cancer survivors race as part of our team, which makes the event that much more powerful.”

Set at an elevation of 8,000 feet in the Zuni Mountains near Gallup, New Mexico, the race provides a unique opportunity for the team to push their limits and ride for a cause close to their hearts. Says Drozdowicz, “The physical challenge of the race is nothing compared to the suffering cancer patients face. We're riding for them, and that’s what makes it all worth it."

Wist welcomes both competitive riders aiming for the win and those who simply want to participate and support the cause. With teams built based on each rider's personal goals, the challenge is as intense or relaxed as the riders choose. Wist takes care of all the logistics and infrastructure for the participants, covering the registration cost, providing custom team kits (uniforms), and ensuring all riders have the necessary nourishment at the race site. Participants are encouraged to focus on fundraising, with each team member given a web link to help raise as much money as possible.

The dealership’s efforts are part of the National Business Products Industry (NBPI), a powerful network of distributors, manufacturers, and suppliers who come together to raise funds specifically for City of Hope. "It's a safe space where we partner with others in our industry to support a higher cause and make a meaningful impact,” General Manager Ian Wist explains. “This a truly collaborative effort—and, together, we’re making a difference." The results speak for themselves: over the years, NBPI has raised more than $250 million for City of Hope, making it the leading fundraising group for the organization

2024 marked Wist’s 8th year of assembling a collection of riders for their Pedal for Hope campaign. In addition to Pedal for Hope, Wist hosts a fundraiser at the WM Phoenix Open 16th Hole, raising further support for City of Hope through the PGA event. Combined, these two initiatives have the potential to bring in between $50,000 and $70,000 annually for the cause.

Wist takes tremendous pride in giving back, and their efforts to raise funds for cancer research have become a core part of their identity. Shares Ian Wist, “These events have become woven into the fabric of our company. It’s more than just about fundraising or team building—it’s about showing that we truly care.”  By channeling their passion and energy into these causes, Wist not only supports vital cancer research but also inspires others in the office products industry to join in the fight against this challenging disease.
