A Functional Redesign That Brings People Together
More than a decade ago, the San Bernardino County Human Services Program Integrity Division was forced to relocate after their previous building closed due to mold concerns. The move happened quickly, leaving the team to adapt to a space that wasn’t designed for their long-term needs. What began as a temporary solution became their workplace for years to come.
While the building offered plenty of natural light, the layout created challenges. Teams were scattered, managers were separated from their staff, and communication often required extra effort. As the division grew and technology evolved, those gaps only became more noticeable.
To address these issues, the County partnered with HON and OES Office Furniture to reimagine a workspace that brings everyone back together. The new layout aligns key departments, places managers closer to their teams, and creates larger open areas where staff can connect more naturally. With updated conference rooms and shared training spaces, the redesign supports both the collaborative and task-oriented aspects of their important work serving the community.
Design That Brings People Together
The new space was designed to align people, process, and productivity. Natural light, open sightlines, and intentionally planned zones keep teams connected while supporting individual focus. Managers now sit near their staff, creating a natural flow of communication that strengthens teamwork.
“Before, we were spread apart and disconnected,” said Michael Newell, Facilities Manager “Now, everyone has a place that’s both functional and connected — it really changes how we work.”
Thoughtful Details That Make Work Better
For the Program Integrity Division, the difference is more than visual. The upgraded furnishings and layout have made day-to-day work smoother and more comfortable.
“The renovated space has significantly improved functionality and aesthetics,” said Shelia Jackson, Division Chief. “The open design and upgraded furniture have boosted morale and productivity — our employees feel valued.”
Work Wins: Investing in People
By bringing teams together in one bright, efficient environment, San Bernardino County is seeing how the right space can strengthen culture. “This project reminded us that investing in our workspace is investing in our people,” said Jackson. “When employees feel supported, their work reflects that.”
The HON Difference
From planning to installation, the HON team and OES Office Furniture ensured every detail supported the County’s goals and delivered on the promise to make their space work with solutions that are dependable, durable, and designed for connection.
