RESHAPING THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE

“We loved working with HON because of the outstanding products, reliable customer service and amazing warranty that they offered.”
- Elaine Metcalf, MIC Director

The Missouri Innovation Campus (MIC) was created to improve education by reducing the cost of learning, providing students with competitive skillsets and connecting businesses with a trained workforce. The only thing it needed was an adaptable, work-like space to change the way students experience this type of education.

So the University of Central Missouri (UCM) and the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District worked together to build one convenient center for both high school and UCM students in the program. With construction underway, HON worked alongside UCM, Lee’s Summit R-7 Purchasing Department, Staples® Business Advantage and Gould & Evans to plan a modern, comfortable learning space with forward-thinking design features and furniture solutions that encourages flexibility, supports active listening and better prepares students for their future careers.

THE OPPORTUNITY

From the time the MIC was created in 2012, its partners envisioned a single facility that would become the permanent home for the center and its students. When it was time to design the new building, MIC called on HON and Staples® Business Advantage to provide furniture solutions that would allow students to train in a nonclassroom space that’s similar to a workplace environment and flexible enough to accommodate various learning styles and future growth.

THE SOLUTION

HON solutions helped transform MIC’s new campus into a modern, motivating space that mirrors many contemporary workplaces. Light scale desking, ergonomic seating, tech-friendly workstations and colorful common areas help create a comfortable, connected learning environment that puts students in a work-like setting to maximize training potential and encourage teamwork, concentration and creative thinking.

THE RESULTS

With help from HON, the new MIC is thriving. “The new furniture and environment provide the ‘lift’ that our school needs and not the ‘drag’,” explains MIC Director, Elaine Metcalf. Students can meet and study in comfortable common areas. Tables and worksurfaces are tech-ready for constant connectivity. Bold colors and modern patterns make students feel welcome and inspired. Furniture solutions facilitate active listening, collaboration and adaptability—qualities that are paramount in today’s workplaces. Now, with an environment that’s fresh, innovative and full of flexible learning spaces, the MIC is reshaping the learning experience.
