Supporting Care, Comfort, and Connection in Community Health
Change in healthcare environments is constant—but comfort, safety, and dignity should never be. For San Ysidro Health Center’s San Diego PACE facility, the goal was to create spaces that support high-quality, compassionate care for adults ages 55 and older, while also empowering the care teams who serve them every day. The result is a flexible, welcoming environment designed to promote ease of movement, daily efficiency, and long-term durability across a wide range of care settings.

Project Challenge
Designing for this community required furniture solutions that emphasized safety, accessibility, and ease of use. The facility included smaller and irregularly shaped spaces, creating challenges for standard furniture layouts across both private and shared offices. In a high-use healthcare environment, materials also needed to support frequent cleaning while maintaining comfort and durability.
Project Solution
HON approached the project with a focus on accessibility, adaptability, and daily usability. Seating and furnishings were selected to support safe movement, provide consistent comfort, and function intuitively for patients and staff alike. Flexible solutions allowed spaces to adapt to irregular floorplans while healthcare-appropriate materials simplified cleaning and supported a hygienic, long-term care environment.
“The team made a complex project feel manageable. They adapted to shifting schedules and coordinated seamlessly alongside construction, which allowed us to keep moving forward despite constant changes. The furniture solutions were thoughtfully planned and continue to support how the space is used day to day.”
