Building Opportunities with Purpose-Driven Design
Located in Atlanta, GA, the Tommy Nobis Center has long been a leader in facilitating employment opportunities for people with disabilities. For nearly 50 years, this nonprofit organization has been a beacon of hope for individuals with disabilities, guiding them on their journeys toward meaningful employment. In an effort to better serve its community, the Tommy Nobis Center moved from a 60,000 square foot building in Marietta for a more efficient, newly renovated 25,000 square foot space in Cumberland.
But it’s not just about geography. They’re redefining their commitment to empower and uplift those they serve. With the support of HON, this transition reflects a deep understanding of how a thoughtfully designed environment can enhance the mission of helping individuals thrive.

Purpose with a Broader Reach
Under the guidance of CEO Dave Ward, the organization has expanded its reach across 23 states, fulfilling vital federal contracts that connect individuals with stable, rewarding jobs. Their mission—rooted in the principles of education, training, and employment—ensures that every person has the resources and opportunities necessary to succeed.
“Our mission is to create a world where people with disabilities are valued and empowered to achieve their full potential,” says Ward. “Every step we take is focused on helping individuals find their place in the workforce.”
The new facility’s strategic location not only provides better accessibility but also fosters community connections. Surrounded by well-known brands like CNN and The Weather Channel, this site reinforces the Center’s dedication to inclusivity and accessibility while opening doors to partnership opportunities.
The Tommy Nobis Center recognizes that impactful programs are key to creating lasting change. Their accelerated vocational and life skills training program offers hands-on experience and guarantees participants a job upon completion, along with six months of ongoing support.

A Space That Speaks to People
The Tommy Nobis Center’s new home is designed to reflect its mission of empowerment and support. Working directly with HON, every element—from the layout to the furniture—has been selected to enhance accessibility and promote collaboration. The facility boasts spacious classrooms, collaborative areas, and inviting pathways that cater to a variety of needs.

From versatile seating to mobile training tables to efficient workstations, the HON solutions placed in each space—conference areas, lounges, classrooms, and more—were carefully chosen to meet the diverse needs of students and staff members alike. The addition of height-adjustable desking in both private and shared offices take health and well-being into consideration, while unique soft seating in collaborative areas encourage socialization and connection. The use of bright colors and inspired wordings infuse the place with a sense of energy and purpose.

“The aim was to make the environment more than a workspace,” Ward explains. “It’s a space for growth, interaction, and, most importantly, for people. Working with HON has been transformative for us. Their commitment to understanding our mission and the needs of those we serve has made this renovation not just a redesign, but a reinvention of how we support individuals on their journey to employment.”

Looking Ahead
The Tommy Nobis Center’s new facility signals the start of a bold new chapter. With a space built on thoughtful design and a mission that prioritizes people, the Center is more equipped than ever to provide opportunities that empower, inspire, and impact lives. With HON, they’ve built a purposeful environment that supports people, celebrates potential, and sets the foundation for a future where everyone has a place to grow.
